Nanowrimo excerpt: untitled

By |November 1st, 2013|

Excerpt from Chapter 1:

I hated night clubs almost as much as I hated Top Forty, but that never stopped me from having a good time. I rarely liked the crowd Nunzio’s favorite spots attracted but I did like to dance. As much as rhythmic grinding could be called dancing by the time I was three sheets to the wind and writhing against the nearest hard body. Sandwiched between my best friend and a guy in a sideways baseball cap, life could have been worse, and it was when I gasped in Nunzio’s ear that I was thirsty and he supplied me with a stout glass of vodka instead of water. I choked, spitting it on his shirt, and he shoved me in the direction of the bar.
Clive popped into my head and I scowled at the bartender, demanding water, and banishing the mental image of my ex. Who cared if he’d always taken care of me when I drank too much, despite how much it irritated him? He’d been lining up back-up generators in case the power in our two year relationship fizzled.
“Come on,” I muttered, glaring at the back of the bartender’s head when he kept his back to me. “I just want some water!”
The bartender turned, scathing in his spike-covered vest, and gave me a glass of water the size of a thimble. It would likely refrain from hydrating an elf.
“Well fuck you too,” I said, my voice nearly lost in the aggressive beat of the music.
“What do you expect? You barked on the guy as soon as you got here and I’ve been waiting ten minutes for a beer.”
My lips pulled back from my teeth and I looked to the left, fully prepared to unleash the full extent of my drunken  rage on the poor bastard who’d dared to speak, but the words shriveled up before I could say them.
He was lovely.
First thing I noticed was the smile–too big, probably drunken, but it could probably light up a funeral parlor. He had a great face–big dark eyes, nice mouth, and platinum hair–and was a little shorter than me but his body looked strong beneath a t-shirt that seemed to be emblazoned with a sewed on periodic table.
“Nice shirt you have there. Nerd.”
“What’s nerdier? Me wearing it or you knowing what it is?”
“What idiot wouldn’t recognize the periodic table?”
The guy raised his hand and twirled his finger to indicate the people around us. “Mostly everyone whose tried to shove their hand up it.”
“Big tally?”
“Could be if I’d thought to keep one. I didn’t feel like it was worth it to keep track of the amount of morons in the world. Or this club.”
I wanted to have sex with him.
“Who’s this?” Nunzio slung an arm around my shoulder and pulled me against him in a half-hug. He pressed a sloppy kiss to my face and squinted down at T-shirt Guy. “Whoa, the periodic table! That’s awesome!”
I wanted Nunzio to die. Instead of killing him, I shoved him away and wiped the side of my face.
“It would figure that the only two smart people in this establishment are together.”
“We’re not toget–“
“It’s ’cause we’re teachers. Teachers are supposed to be smart or the world turns out stupid.”

I stared at Nunzio and willed a sinkhole to open under his feet.
“I’m Nunzio and this fine as fuck Puerto Rican piece of man meat is my best friend Michael.”
“I’m David.”
“Hello there David,” Nunzio leered, grabbing the front of the periodic table and tugging David closer. “So, check it. Michael just broke up with his lame boyfriend. You should suck his dick to make him feel better.”
I hated Nunzio less, but still blanched and turned to the bartender again. “I’ll tip you fifty percent if give me eight shots.”
“Damn,” Nunzio muttered. “Slow it down, Mikey.”
“They’re not all for me. Two for you, two for David. The rest are for me.”
I looked at David when I said his name and nearly melted against the side of the bar when he flashed that smile at me again. We were so having sex tonight.

Chat Highlights from 10/5

By |October 6th, 2013|

Last night I had an awesome time chatting it up with folks from the Sonny & Ais group (or who followed the link from one of my social media dwellings :]. Good questions were asked, teasers and spoilers were given, and then it just turned into meandering conversation and good good fun.
So, for those of you who weren’t there but are interested in some of the things that came up, here are some highlights of what we talked about:
1) After Midnight sequel
There will be an After Midnight sequel.  I’d always intended to write a follow-up to the book but after my mind got to spinning away, it has turned into a full-length novel that I have already begun outlining. It will take place about a month after the end of After Midnight.
One teaser that I did say is that it will focus on Gordon and Adam’s relationship as well as the putting out the fires that started in the first book around Lexington. I plan to start writing this in the spring.
2) Next novel
I talked a little bit about my next novel, which is a contemporary paranormal, and gave a little bit of information on the plot. A brief overview is that the main character is a psychic who is trying to escape his family’s dark past while also trying to investigate a murder. After running away from his hometown, he meets a guy on the road who turns out to be one of the only people he can trust as he tries to uncover the truth.
3) Emilio Vega! (of ICoS)
We talked a lot about Emilio, his past, and my planned series of novellas which will document his life. The series, 180 Proof Vega, will be self-published and will be about 6 volumes. It will document his life from the time he was vetted into the Agency to the time when he disappeared. Zach will pop up in the third volume, and Doug will be a pretty prominent character throughout since he and Emilio were best friends long before Zach showed up.
I also showed the cover for the first volume. :]

I also explained why I will be self-publishing anything ICoS related. The short of it is that I refuse to give up any creative control when it comes to the world that me and Ais have created and been working on for nearly a decade. It started with us and it will eventually end that way.
4) Writing tips and strategies
This conversation was awesome and many people discussed how they plan, how they write and what we do when we get stuck. This wasn’t just me going off on my super awesome ways, just all of us talking about how we tackle writing.
5) Totally random hilarity
Inappropriateness and hilarity prevailed eventually, and the jokes and conversation wandered all over the map. It was a lot of fun and I hope to do it again in the future (despite the jokes about possibly nude photos and frosted tips—that I did not have!). :] When my friends show up, the teasing gets out of control in a good way.

After Midnight is Here!

By |September 17th, 2013|

Blurb: Gordon Frost is a survivor. He survived a war that ravaged the nation, and he made it through the orphanages and crime-ridden slums that followed. With few prospects for the future, Gordon carved out a niche for himself in the expanding drug trade of Lexington, PA. It’s not pretty, but it’s his, and it beats what he was doing before. But a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time results in a brush with death, going by the name of Adam. Afterward, the life that seemed good enough before, isn’t quite the same.
Adam Blake is an assassin on the brink of being terminated by the very organization that controls him. He completed his mission, but not without being seen. With his secrets in danger of being exposed by Gordon, Adam knows he should kill the smart-mouthed redhead, but finds himself intrigued by the troublesome civilian instead.
When Gordon’s knack for finding trouble combines with the dangerous consequences of Adam’s indecision, their worlds intertwine in an explosive way.
I’m happy to announce that After Midnight is now available at Amazon, All Romance Ebooks, and directly through Smashwords!
The book is not available in paperback YET, and I don’t have a specific time table for that.

Thank you guys for all your support while I’ve been self-promoing it up this summer, and I hope you enjoy the book. :]

New Deets on After Midnight: cover, new blurb AND my new site!

By |July 17th, 2013|

I’ve been talking about revising, rewriting, and editing the new and improved version of After Midnight for a couple of months and in the past few weeks things have suddenly gotten real.
Publication (After Midnight will be self-published) is getting closer! A date is set (9/17/2013), a new blurb has been written, and most of all… the cover is done!

I drool just looking at it. The photography is by Martin Stavars and the design is by our very own Susan Lee. She not only designed the cover, but she was the one who motivated me to try to get the license for it after spotting it on my Pinterest page. So BIG SHOUT OUT to Susan for being AWESOME! :]
New Blurb:
Gordon Frost is a survivor. He survived a war that ravaged the nation, and he made it through the orphanages and crime-ridden slums that followed. ***
I love this cover not only because it’s gorgeous, but because it fits the mood of AM and the ICoS universe perfectly. You do NOT have to have read ICoS to read AM as it is a standalone, but they exist in the same post-apocalyptic future. I originally wrote this book two years ago, in the summer of 2011, and was posting it by the seat of my pants on Adultfanfiction.net, never thinking in a million years that people would actually like it or review it or treat it like a “real book”.
Even so, I loved writing it. It was messy and all over the place at first because it was a MASSIVE stress release for me. During that time we were working hard on ICoS and sweating over every last detail of the plot, I was in an intense summer training program and going through a lot of personal issues. My entire life, writing has been the one thing I loved and enjoyed and could take me away from reality, and writing AM helped me cope that summer. It was fun, fast, reckless, and I didn’t give a damn that I WASN’T sweating over it like with ICoS. Two years later, I realized the story had potential and revised it a ton, but the heart of the story is still there. Gordon is one of my favorite characters. Not only because he’s a big mouth asshole (like me, ha), but because a lot of this book is about him being afraid of change. The concept of being too paralyzed with fear to change your situation (whether it’s a relationship, friendship, or job) is something that has affected me and so many people that I know.
SO!

To readers who have not read AM before the heavy revisions: AM is much more character-driven and focuses less on politics and action than anything you may have read or heard about ICoS. This is more about bad choices, crime and poverty (and maybe some dark humor).
To readers who HAVE read the first draft of AM: Read it again! I’ve revised, rewritten, and added a ton of new content. Best example? There will be about 6 new chapters all from Adam’s POV.
To all readers: Eventually I’m going to post goodies on my new website www.santinohassell.com, so make sure to check out all of my social media links, especially FB and Pinterest/Grooveshark for book-specific extras.
